here, in Italy, we have a woflf population of several hundred of individuals. (in 1970 were only about 100) Generally our land is densely populated, however wolf pushes on as far as neighbours of big town on the border of the first hills of Appennine chain. Poaching is heavy, but legal protection at least is total and, first of all, indiscutible.
In Appennines, where there is sheep breeding, sheep-dogs ( pastore maremmano-abruzzese)are very successful in preventing predation . Since 1997 in Switzerland started trials to importe this kind of non-invasive preventig measure that for centuries has been so successful (and stil it is) in Italy. Also in USA there are trials with shepers-dogs, imported from Europe and Asia , but there it's facing prejudice by many shepherds and ranchers (and by people involved in predatory-controls !).However It's always difficult to change outlook in people. Of course is not simple to set up this kind of experiment in a Country so far, so different, but I think it'll be successful. It need just humility (to learn) and patience (to try and, first of all, to fit the method on the needs of the different environment).
